Falco’s New Power Play: Oil-Type Bushing Current Transformers

Falco is expanding its Bushing Current Transformer (BCT) product range to include Oil-Type Bushing Current Transformers (BCTs). This addition provides a solution for current measurement and protection within the insulating oil of high-voltage power transformers.

Oil-Type BCTs are an established component type in the electrical grid, and their inclusion in the Falco portfolio is a direct response to customer needs for internal transformer components.

Engineered for Immersion: Why Oil-Type BCTs Win

The unique strength of an oil-type BCT lies in its environment. Mounted in the main tank of a power transformer and directly along the bushing shank, this internal positioning allows the transformer's insulating oil to also cool the BCT.

Here’s how this works to your advantage:

• Superior Heat Management and Insulation: By being submerged, the BCT is electrically insulated by the oil. More importantly, it uses the oil to provide efficient heat dissipation, ensuring the unit stays within its optimal operating temperature range of -20⁰C to +85⁰C. Our insulation materials, which include wrapped kraft paper and cotton tape, are specifically chosen for their suitability for oil immersion.

• Built for Higher Voltages: The insulating oil provides a significantly higher dielectric strength compared to air-insulated components. This makes our BCTs exceptionally well-suited for higher voltage applications where reliability is non-negotiable.

• Protection Against Faults: When a short circuit happens, the electrical stress is intense. Our BCTs are built with high tolerance to high short circuit conditions. They are rated to withstand a short-time thermal current (Ith) of 35 X (Ipn) for 3 seconds. This rugged construction also helps ensure minimal leakage, giving you the accurate, dependable readings you need for protection systems.

The new line is designed for performance right down to the core. We offer a current capability of 50 - 5000A, with wide dimensional flexibility, featuring inner diameters from 76mm (~3.0 inches) up to 635mm (~25 inches).

For the highest-accuracy applications, we incorporate nanocrystalline cores to ensure optimal performance. Whether you need high-accuracy metering (down to 0.15S per IEEE C57.13) or robust relaying (up to C1200), our Oil-Type BCTs deliver. Plus, they comply with both IEEE C57.13 and IEC 61869 standards.
